It was condemned by the Church and created scandal everywhere. Bardot's then husband and film director Roger Vadim was quick to capitalize. It made a fortune and changed the face of cinema. Jane Fonda called it "the first cinematic blow for women's liberation" and as a landmark in French cinematic culture is considered the film that ushered in the 'New Wave'.
