Beautiful playing, but..........

"I imagine that anybody who would purchase this recording would do so because, like me, they are Brahmsaholics, looking for new uncharted Brahms. As such, the concept of transcribing some of Brahms' Leider for cello and piano is a wonderful idea, and they do, on the whole, work well. But why oh why would Mr. Maisky choose to record the cello arrangement of Brahms 1st violin sonata (which takes up a sizable chunk of the album)? Admittedly it is beautifully played---but anybody who would buy this would certainly already own the violin version of this sonata, and therefore not be too eager to want to sit through his version of it. The recording should have consisted of Leider only. For this reason I give it 4 stars, although the performance deserves 5."
