I bought this cd on a whim not knowing Blossom and I love it

"I bought this cd when I went to purchase Ella Fitzgeralds Best of the Songbooks and was intrigued with Blossom Dearie's name (it's her REAL name) and the cd notes about her voice. I recognized several of my favorite romantic standards: 'Our Love Is Here To Stay' and 'Someone To Watch Over Me' which are wonderfully done. Then the hoping to find love just around the corner lyrics of 'I Walk A Little Faster,' the spend our lives together of 'Dance Only With Me' and the humble and lovestruck words of 'It Amazes Me' ("what he sees in me dazzles me, dazes me; nothing much phases me but to see me in his eyes it just amazes me.") The giddy 'They Say It's Spring' or the melancholy 'Once Upon a Summertime' are so sentimental. On the other hand, the whimsical 'I'm Hip,' 'Rhode Island Is Famous For You' ("peaches come from Georgia, lobsters come from Maine, spuds from Idaho, pencils from Pennsylvania, tents from Tentasee, you come from Rhode Island it's famous for you") and 'Blossom's Blues' make for great listening to or singing along with. Blossom has an unusual voice, like a little girl at times, she plays piano and is accompanied by a jazz ensemble on these recordings from the late 1950's. I wouldn't say I'm a lover of jazz vocalists but this cd falls into the martini lounge category. At age 45 I'm listening to so much old music that is far better than the junk played on the popular radio stations these days. Take a sentimental journey and understand every word Blossom Dearie sings on this delightful cd."

"Blossom Dearie is not really a diva. She's more the Bob Newhart of jazz piano. I mean that in the best way possible."

"I am a second generation Blossom Dearie fan. My mother used to play her albums (yeah, that does date me) while ironing just to make a drearie job fun. I remember her singing her heart out along with this lady with the little girl voice who sings about big girl subjects.
When Ms. Dearie sings "Somewone To Watch Over Me" I want to know that there really is someone to wath over her. She can go from there to the sassy "Always True to You In My Fashion" and to the sweetly sentimental "Once Upon a Summertme" without missing a beat (figuratively) and it works. I haven't heard a Blossom dearie recording that I didn't like, I just like some more than others and this is one of her best.

"This album is more fun than I've had in a long time. Blossom Dearie has the voice of a cartoon character - there's something truly touching about such innocence. The songs are witty and silly, but ring true.
I only leave off the fifth star because she's so flat on a few notes in "I'm Hip" that I'm not sure what note is actually written. I could be missing something, though, never having heard the song performed by any other artist - it could be written as such and/or purposely stylized. "I'm Hip" is my favorite track, actually, so it must be something right :)"
