"This record is part of a series of 3 lp's that was produced on the Black Lion label. I purchased the lp's when I was in college in England. They are from live dates at the Cafe Monmartre in Denmark (Dexter Gordon recorded lots of dates from the same club). This disc features Kenny Drew on piano, Alex Reil on drums, and NHOP on bass. These are some of the most enjoyable Webster records in existance. He was healthy and his playing both romantic and enjoyable. The sound quality is wonderful.
I am a fiend when it comes to hiqh quality headphones/earphones. I was listening to this record. You can hear the cash register ring and glasses tinkle in the bar when the musicians are playing. Suddenly, it sounds like a bartender through away a bottle in a bin. It sounded so real, I ducked. No kidding, I ducked to get out of the way.
This set has come in and out of print several times. Anyway. get all of the Ben Webster from the Cafe Monmarte. If you never have another sset from Webster, you will be fine. Later in his life, Webster kind of limited himself to a small songbook anyway. Chances are that most of the other discs out there from different club or recording dates will feature the same set of songs. Good listening.
