CD Reviews

By 1966, mannerisms were getting old.

"I like the Richard Avedon photograph on the front cover. I read someplace that this album was originally going to be two records and CBS/Columbia decided to take the parts they had and make one record out of them. By 1966, Barbra's mannerisms of (sometimes) shrieking (like on "Happy Days Are Here Again" on the first album) were becoming a little tiresome. She shrieks on "I Wish You Love". I prefer Blossom Dearie's version which swings. At the age of 24 she hadn't developed a lot of mannerisms yet and needed to develop a wider palate in her approach to singing. It's interesting that now (2009) she's doing a jazz album because her mannerisms then seem to be stuck in "anger" and limited her approach to being a jazz singer. When she's great on the sixties albums, she hits her stride. Are those papier-mache bracelets she's wearing? I always wondered."
Her name is Barbra and her age is 24!

"I think this album while it isnt one of her best its not one of her worst. This album inspired Liza Minnelli to do her own French album with also mixed results. Since I dont know french i enjoy those songs but havent a clue what they mean. An album of spanish songs would have been so nice to have also! I think that this album is a pass for casual fans but a must have for ardent fans."
