Synopsis

Album Description
Brazilian Heart features the soaring soprano sounds of vocalist April Aloisio performing both Brazilian classics and traditional jazz standards. Backed by rhythm section veterans Eldee Young and Redd Holt (members of the original Ramsey Lewis trio) April is joined by pianist Wallace Burton and Chicago's own Von Freeman on tenor sax. Also features are Howard Levy on harmonica, Southport labelmates Dave Onderdonk and Mark Walker, the percussion work of Alejo Poveda and Dede Sampaio, and vocalist Joanie Pallatto. A Chicago native, April Aloisio (Ah-loy-see-oh) moved to Cincinnati, Ohio while a high school senior. In developing her professional performing career, April sang with Cincinnati's finest at jazz clubs and festivals prompting Clif Radel of The Cincinnati Enquirer to write: "This woman achieves grand results". April released her first recording on the Mo-Pro label in 1982. April's vocal sound has been compared to Brazilian favorites Astrud Gilberto and Flora Purim. April cites Billie Holliday and Ella Fitzgerald as her personal jazz heroes. These influences are apparent when you hear April's scat singing, yet she maintains her own personal style. "this is the finest music I've heard in years -- she has a lovely voice, very soothing, refreshingly quiet. Good alternative to the usual noise."

"Overall this record is done very well with excellent vocals by April. One cut, IT AIN'T NECCESARILY SO has one of the finest trumpet solos in town. It comes through so well and makes this the "star" cut of the record. Would love to hear a record, or CD, that features both April and top trumpeter Frank Youngwerth playing off of each other. Wow, now that would sell."
