"Songs For Lovers Only is a fine Andy Russell CD. Andy Russell was a great crooner right up there with Dean Martin and the others; but for some reason I can't quite fathom he didn't have the lasting career that the others did. The quality of the sound on this album is excellent; and the artwork on the cover is very well done.
The CD begins with Andy Russell singing ""Magic Is The Moonlight" so sweetly; his tenor voice is deep and full of masculine warmth. Andy never misses a beat; and his uncanny sense of timing enhances his performance all the more. The strings that play complement Andy's singing to perfection! "I Can't Begin To Tell You" is another terrific ballad made so beautiful by Andy's sublime treatment of this ballad. Andy croons this lovely ballad about a man and just how much he truly loves his sweetheart. As with "Magic Is The Moonlight," "I Can't Begin To Tell You" also uses the strings to great advantage and Andy's performance lacks nothing--it's all THAT good.
"They Say It's Wonderful" is another stunning melody that Andy delivers with great sensitivity; and this nostalgic melody is very pretty. Andy sings this perfectly and this type of torch song shines like silver and gold when Andy sings it. Similarly, listen for Andy to do good on "I'll Never Love Again;" this melancholy torch song gets a faster tempo than I'm used to but it still holds its own very well.
"I Cried For You" features Andy front and center--and that's terrific! Andy doesn't waste a moment--he delivers this ballad with heart and soul. "I Cried For You" by Andy is probably THE definitive rendition of this classic number.
"My First, My Last, My Only" gets the royal treatment from Andy Russell who sings this passionately; the strings are a bit too loud but this is only a minor disappointment. Andy's vocals are easily heard and quite clear throughout this tune. "My First, My Last, My Only" has a very pretty musical arrangement and this works wonders for this number. In addition, "I Should Care" shines brilliantly when Andy Russell performs it; the music that goes with his singing is nothing short of perfect. Honestly, when I hear a ballad like this sung by Andy Russell I am completely baffled as to why he didn't have a huge career in America.
"All Of My Life" stuns me with its beauty; and the CD ends very strong with Andy Russell performing "Don't Blame Me." "Don't Blame Me" is very sweet and I really like this tune; it also makes a solid ending for this album.
Andy Russell deserves so much more recognition than he gets; I hope as his CDs sell he will be more fondly remembered. This CD is excellent for Andy's fans; and people who love the crooners and classic pop vocals will cherish this CD for quite some while to come.
