"Richard King, the first-chair hornist of the Cleveland Orch., here offers a recital of seemingly simple tunes by Schubert. There have been similar CDs from cellists, most notably Mischa Maisky. The cello is a more expressive, singing instrument than the French horn. Nevertheless, King imbues these melodies with subtlety and nuance. The way he sustains the long legato line of Du Bist die Ruh is quite amazing. As an object lesson in breath control, musical taste, and legato tone, it would be hard to beat this recording.
The absence of words is not exactly crippling to Schubert lieder, but I was interested to see how King might manage the miniature drama of Gretchen am Spinnrade. He offers a long crescendo leading to an impassioned outburst, lacking only the ultimate heartache that one hears from a great singer. Rastlose Liebe could be more exciting, but I like the joke of Die Post from Winterreise, where the piano imitates a horn throughout while the real horn imitates the voice. In the end, this CD may appeal mostly to French horn students but taken a few songs at a time there's enjoyment for the general listener, too."
