CD Reviews

The Singing Beena
S. Karulkar | CA USA | 06/11/2004
(5 out of 5 stars)

"I came about buying this CD reading all the reviews on the website. This is my first ZMD CD and I must say I am hooked. It is a beautiful recording to begin with, I must say they have superior quality recordings of Indian music in the West. One must not miss the introduction of the raag Todi ( Track 1), that won my heart. Its amazing to hear the Beena make almost a vocal sound. Certainly not for the casual listener though. Thank you, Late Zia M Dagar for breaking the family rule of not playing the Beena outside of the home. How else could we hear this divine music."
Heavenly spheres

"Listening to Zia Mohiuddin Dagar play rudra veena is like watching the stars at night. If you can contemplate all the ways that all the stars move in relation to each other, you may understand imaginatively how Dagar creates precise relationships between all the tones he plays."
Master of the Dagarvani.

"This recording reveals the genius and unique technique of the late Ustad Zia Mohiuddin Dagar. The musical tradition, Dagarvani of Dhrupad and his lineage are stuff of legend. He displays his soft and gentle technique on this grand and noble instrument. His speciality is the Aalaap in which he displays his mastery of this ancient tradition."
