"Zhou Yu is truly a master of the Erhu, the Chinese equivalent of the violin. This CD consists of Zhou Yu's own compositions for the instrument. Some pieces incorporate regional Chinese folk tunes, some are entirely his own work. They are arranged for an ensemble of traditional Chinese instruments, but the main feature throughout is Zhou Yu's virtuoso performance. This is not some second hand attempt at imitating Western orchestral music using Chinese sounds. It is a genuine modern development of Chinese musical tradition. These meditations on Chinese people and places are sweet, dramatic, sad and gentle by turns."

"This disc is fantastic.



I'm not analyzing very much what I am listening to, but just hear the end of "Rivers of Blood" and be in awe.



There's a great instrumentalist here, the recording is very good (not perfect), the songs are rich in interesting forms, playing, and harmonies.



Then you could say that it is classical Chinese music. That's what I got this album for, but now I listen to it simply because it is some excellent acoustic music."
