Zemlinsky (1871-1942) was a composer/conductor who had a fair amount of fame--until the Germans started taking over that part of the world. Zemlinsky's career as both a composer and a conductor came to an end. He died penniless in exile in the United States. Now his music is enjoying a rediscovery. Zemlinsky, it turns out, created some of the most beautiful orchestra music of this century. Die Seejungfrau (The Mermaid), a 1902-3 work is an extraordinary tone poem--a mix of Debussy and Mahler that sounds like neither. Sinfonietta (1934) matches Bax or Hindemith. Find this guy's music. -- Paul Cook
