Amazon.comZdenek Fibich (1850-1900) may not have been as ardent a Czech nationalist as Smetana or Dvorák, but he was as committed a romantic. The early Piano Quartet is a gorgeous example of high romanticism, enhanced here by very sensitive and effective playing, especially from the pianist. The climaxes could have been more passionate, perhaps, but this recording will still stand as a fine introduction to a wonderful piece. The later Quintet is even better, music of real substance, beautifully written and memorable, and including some Czech flavoring. Unlike so many recordings of unusual repertoire, this disc gives us excellent music that will remain in our hearts long after most novelties are forgotten. --Leslie Gerber
