CD Reviews

Powerful, evocative and moving....
Coltbear - A Music Fan | NY/NJ Metro Area | 02/04/2006
(5 out of 5 stars)

"I was somewhat shocked that no one reviewed this album. I have many of his others, and believe it is among Zbigniew Preisner's best works.

I have close to 500 soundtrack recordings, and from my personal standpoint, Zbigniew Preisner, along with Lisa Gerrard, Carter Burwell and Wojchech Kilar (to name only a few), are among the absolute BEST (and sadly, overlooked) composers in my collection.

Like many reviewers mention about his works, this one also stands on its own without you having seen the movie, but takes on a new significance if you have. In this case, "At Play In The Fields Of The Lord" is ALSO a sadly overlooked movie, one worth hunting down for your viewing pleasure, as acquiring this soundtrack is for your listening pleasure.

But more than that, this score is DEEPLY primal, evocative and also VERY powerful and moving when you hear it. I am referring especially to the instrumentals, "Main Title Theme," "Revelations," "Amazon Beginnings" and "Finale" - all recurring themes throughout the soundtrack. (These alone merit the 5-star rating.) You are transported to a place deep within your subconscious that Preisner not only reaches, but conveys throughout this and many of his other works in an inexplicable manner. You KNOW it when you HEAR it, but more importantly, you FEEL it. Quite an accomplishment for ANY piece of music, but an absolute gift that most of Preisner's original compositions have.

This one HAS it, and is one of his best. DON'T miss out on this one. IMHO, the other tracks are bonus tracks to the outstanding ones mentioned above.

(P.S. I don't believe they released the movie on DVD yet - I really wish they would - if you liked the complex story-telling and cinematography in "Out Of Africa" and "The English Patient," to name a few, you'll love this as much. Not only that, you get to see Tom Berenger AND Kathy Bates naked - NOT at the same time, though! Whew!) ;-)"
