CD Reviews

Allez Zack! Sa Musique est beau!
07/10/2001
(4 out of 5 stars)

"In case you don't know Zack, he is one of America's foremost singer/songwriters/poet. The thing is, hailing from Southwestern Louisiana, the majority of his songs are in French (as are his two books of poetry). You add to this the fact that he rarely tours stateside and you have one absolute genius completely ignored in his home country. He is however, well known in Canada, France and Louisiana. This disk is a decent collection of Zack's early work on his own RZ label. The selections go from straight-forward Cajun songs to soulful R&B and stop-off everywhere in between. Most of this material is wonderful ("Madeleine" and "Ma Louisianne"). Some of it does sound a bit dated. It is a good compilation for new fans looking for a taste of early Zack. My problem is, the original albums are each so cohesive that the songs do suffer from being transplanted. Each one of Zack's albums is wonderfully different. For the uninitiated looking for somewhere to start, I would suggest either "Cap Enrage" or "Snake Bite Love". This is a great collection even if it doesn't quite capture the depth of Zack's tremendous talent. Truly, if you haven't heard Zack, you are missing something."
