Synopsis

Tibetan musicians who can appeal well beyond the realm of strictly devotional music are scarce. So Yungchen Lhamo's wavering voice is especially startling on Tibet, Tibet, where she unwraps her mid-range vocal roll across wide-open fields. She also sings through the low-end fog of monastic chanting, replete with the clanging cymbals and fundamental rumble. An astonishing smoothness arises from Yungchen and the monks' combined voices, and even when she's soloing, which she often is, Yungchen keeps herself both silken and sharp. Many of the songs on Tibet, Tibet are from the traditional repertoire, but Yungchen's voice broadens the genre just as Enya broadened Celtic music to a popular audience. A laborer until she escaped from Tibet under duress, Yungchen has studied at the Tibetan Institute of Performing Arts and supports a foundation in her name that seeks to aid women in escaping human rights abuses. --Andrew Bartlett

CD Reviews

Never miss this one!

"Yungchen Lhamo's voice is so expressive, passionate and beautiful. Accompanied by the chant recited by the Monk, the CD creates a unique and somewhat mysterical/nostalgic feeling that deeply and completely touches your soul. The music is a bridge of the heaven and the earth. There is no doubt in my mind that this CD represents one of the greatest assets of musical archival."
The voice of a land that, in the past, was near the Sky.

"Yungchen Lhamo: a passionate pure voice of a woman who paints for us the spirit of a land that, about 40 years ago, was FREE.

It is the voice of the snow, the voice of the wind, the voice

of the water among the rocks.

Tibet, the real Tibet is dead under foreign military boots.

Young monks and younger nuns, still in their childhood, have

been put in prison for 12 years because of a placard on which it

was written: "FREEDOM FOR TIBET".

All that remains is the voice of Yungchen Lhamo.

"If there was any question in your mind if you are a deeply emotional person, just listen to this. If you cry, you are. After listening to this for 5 seconds, I was crying like a baby - it's so unbelievably touching it's hard to describe in words, you merely have to experience it for yourself first hand."
