CD ReviewsWasn't that good? zack zagato | Portland, OR | 02/10/2009 (4 out of 5 stars) "A very decent, joyous collection of the man's best work. Raunchy and raw, there's nary a track that doesn't gnash and grind around a double entendre or two. This was racy stuff for the 40's and 50's and still holds up quite well today. His backing bands were very tight as well. A king among men; like Hugh Hefner I'm sure Wynonie never wanted to die due to the pursuits both men reveled in. Essential really." Wynonie Harris ROCKS!! Zig28 | Maryland, United States | 03/06/2009 (5 out of 5 stars) "I thought I knew a lot about '40's and '50's roots music, but for some reason, I missed Wynonie Harris until I heard "Keep on Churnin' ('Til the Butter Comes)" one day on the radio.
I immediately went home and ordered this CD and haven't stopped playing it since. The recordings on this are excellent quality and the band is phenomenal -- I understand Illinois Jacquet plays sax on many of the cuts, which adds even more. Harris' voice is smooth, rough, varied and oh-so-soulful -- a way better voice than any rocker I can think of. He was supposedly the guy Elvis took inspiration from -- "race music", they called it -- and some of the lyrics are definitely racy, but in another way, with double meanings, if you get my drift. Definitely the roots of rock here, with some absolutely jump-jivin' tunes that will get even the dead up and moving. This is some of the best popular/early rock music you'll ever hear, definitely get this CD!" |
