Synopsis

Product Description
On the heels of their much lauded second full-length, 'Left For Dead', Wussy return with their new self-titled album. Former Ass Ponys frontman Chuck Cleaver continues to step away from his past incarnation to create something wholly new along with co-writer and vocalist Lisa Walker. Production duties again fell on the shoulders of John Curley (Afghan Whigs) who managed to somehow balance all the parts of Wussy as equals.

CD Reviews

Most consistent album yet from Wussy
Paul Allaer | Cincinnati | 05/16/2009
(4 out of 5 stars)

"Wussy, the indie band lead by Check Cleaver and Lisa Walker, already returns with a new album, on the heels of the critically well-received 2007 album "Left for Dead" and its companion 2008 EP "Rigor Mortis". This is the band's third album.

"Wussy" (12 tracks; 42 min.) marks a correction of sorts to the writing credits on "Left for Dead" (where Walker had penned 8 of the 12 tunes), and now both Cleaver and Walker each wrote exactly 6 tracks. The album's opener is "Little Paper Birds" which sounds sluggish. Things kick off right after that, though with the rousing "Gone Missing". "Scream & Scream Again" is the most accessible song on here, and an obvious candidate for a single (if such thing still existed). "Dreadful Sorry" and "Magic Words" are other strong tracks contributed by Chuck Weaver. The second half of the album in fact is the better one, with hardly a weak moment on it. Most songs come in at about 3 1/2 minutes, and as such this album clips by in no time. With the band still searching for its sound on the initial two albums, it's appropriate that this album is self-titled, as if the introduce the band once and for all to listeners. I find "Wussy" to be the most consistent album of the band to date.

I would be remiss if I didn't point out that Wussy hails from my hometown of Cincinnati, where an incredible vibrant indie-rock scene has developed in the last 4-5 years, with bands like the Heartless Bastards, Bad Veins (highly anticipated debut album coming out in July), the Pomegranates (second album just out), Buffalo Killers (second album released last yaer), just to mention these few examples, and of course Wussy. This album marks the last contribution of drummer Dawn Burman, who since this was recorded has been replaced by Joe Klug. I've had the opportunity to catch the band in concert with the new drummer already a couple of times in the last few months, and the band sounds better than ever. Meanwhile, "Wussy" is highly recommended!"
