The singer and guitarist - son of a miner, and originally from Germany - left for the U.S. in 1978. He was a street musician before joining the folk scene there. His songs speak of love and freedom, his lyrics falling somewhere between themes of melancholy and political outrage. His voice is sometimes compared to that of Tom Waits, with that same quality of raw intensity and a lifetime's-worth of weatherbeaten weariness in it. "World Gone Wrong" (2011) is Matura's nineteenth album, on Ozella Songways. (With a nod to https://www.jazzthing.de/review/roger-matura-world-gone-wrong/) |
