"If you are not familiar with Szymanowski's violin sonata you are in for a treat if you like turbulently romantic music. Waves of emotion crash and surge through this achingly volcanic piece. If you enjoy the cello sonatas of Rachmaninov or the violin sonatas of Dale, Medtner and Miaskovsky then you must hear this disc and this recording which is direct, subtle and brimming with unruly emotional force. The piece Harnasie is fully mature Szymanowski and radiates poetic isolation and a volatile tendency to ecstatic expression. The Nocturne is the first of two movements from Op. 28. Lastly come the Three Myths which are symphonic poems for violin and piano. These are wonderfully played by the duo who masterfully catch the steady yet mystical communion inherent in these pieces. The illusion of the performance being swayed by the spontaneity of the moment is fully intact. This Bakowski version I feel is the best version available of the complete Szymanowski music for violin and piano. Szymanowski is often overlooked and is sadly not as well known as other composers of his time. This is a wonderful cd with some of the most most beautiful and emotional music I've heard.
