Glorious.

"This 2-piano version of Mathis der Maler is the real thing, not an abridged version. A comparison of the 2-piano version of Mathis with an orchestral version (e.g., Blomstedt with San Francisco Symphony) reveals that the timings are essentially identical.
One might be more aware of the rhythmic patterns of this work with the 2-piano version, than with the orchestral version, because the 2-piano version lacks the multi-hued instrumentation found in symphonic recordings. The opening notes of this recording, which appear to be in three quarter time, might bring to mind the periodic rising and falling of a small boat as it travels on a bay or ocean. The 2-piano version of Mathis might be especially attractive for those not in the mood for the occasionally blustery, brassy qualitis of Mathis.
Ragtime is available on a number of other recordings, for example, the Serebrier conducting. Ragtime is a playful piece, reminiscent of Circus Polka by Stravinsky and Halloween by Ives. The 2-piano sonatas on this disc will not strike the ears as overly adventuresome, and beckon repeated listenings.
Since this recording was not available from amazon dot com, I ordered it on line directly from the German manufacturer. It took exactly one month to arrive. What a glorious moment it was, when I opened the package, and began listening to the opening notes of Mathis. FIVE STARS. Or perhaps, a JIGGA-TILLION STARS."
