Synopsis
Amazon.com If Woody Shaw had been a 1970s politician rather than one of the decade's most respected trumpeters, he'd have been an ally of that inveterate New Dealer Hubert Humphrey. Indeed, the New York-based jazzman (who died in 1989 at the age of 44 after he was hit by a train) made no apologies for occupying the center-left of the jazz spectrum. Neither a fire-breathing avant-gardist nor a hidebound traditionalist, Shaw played, in his own words, "good modal bop"--though Little Red's Fantasy qualifies as better than merely "good"; this 1976 collection is considered one of the prolific player's superior efforts. Three original compositions from the session leader and one each from pianist Ronnie Mathews and bassist Stafford James make up the repertoire. Shaw's confident, fervent playing is complemented throughout by veteran alto man Frank Strozier, whose playing the trumpeter first encountered as a teen. Drummer Eddie Moore rounds up the unfortunately short-lived quintet. Little Red's Fantasy demonstrates that mighty striking jazz comes from some just-off-center angles. --Steven Stolder Similar CDs

CD ReviewsAn underrated genius Joseph A. Gross | Nashville, Tennessee, USA | 04/24/2000 (5 out of 5 stars) "Unfortunately, Woody Shaw, the most innovative jazz trumpeter of them all as far as language, and equally brilliant as a composer, never came close to getting his due in his all too short and tragic life. Little Red's Fantasy is his brightest gem compositionally. The tunes In Case You Haven't Heard, Tomorrow's Destiny, and Little Red's Fantasy are classic representations of Shaw's compositional style, containing all of the definitive elements of Woody's writing style, as well as many of the points of departure for his brilliant improvising. Mr. Shaw's post-Coltrane explorations of synthetic scales, altered pentatonics, and wide intervals will prove to form the melodies of the future of the jazz trumpet and the jazz language in general before all is said and done. But Woody's compositional and improvisational styles appeal to the non-musician as well with their melodic, catchy hooks and grooves, and a fun, upbeat, positive quality that can lift anyone's mood. A brilliant combination of genius and fun!" A great taste from Woody Shaw! campagna@hotmail.com | 03/22/2000 (5 out of 5 stars) "I have waited for years for Woody Shaw's Muse catalog to come to CD. Little Red's Fantasy is one of his best. Shaw is a wonderfully creative player and composer, who always seemed to have great players join him. He swings hard, thinks hard, and deserves far more recognition. Also check out Love Dance, Rosewood, and if it ever returns on CD, the Woody Shaw Qunitet Live at the Village Vanguard." Always beautiful Aydin Erer | Ankara, - Turkey | 11/27/2001 (5 out of 5 stars) "Woody Shaw is one of the best trumpeters on the planet. All of his albums are superb. There is no bad track on this cd. He swings hard performing in his unique beautiful style. His band plays very nice.Highly recommended.
His death is a big loss for the Jazz community." |
