"you're in for a big surprise here if you've never heard these woody recordings before. the only bargain here is that it's 2 records for the price of 1, but whether it's 2 records you actually want to hear is another question. the "jazz swinger" is an album of woody SINGING on every cut and singing all al jolson tunes nonetheless. WHAT were they thinking at columbia??? i mean woody had just recorded some of the hippest stuff from '62-'64 on phillips and had a band full of some of the hottest young talent imaginable. the only reason anyone would want to even listen to this album is because chase and lin biviano are in the trumpet section, carl fontana is playing the jazz trombone chair and i believe nistico might be on tenor on some tracks. it's really hard to put too much of a positive spin on this because no matter how hard the band swings or how clean the recording is, there's always woody's godawful vocal to bring you back to reality. alas, the other album they've combined it with is also a columbia reissue but it's from the late '40s when woody did his first stint with columbia. great players on the band in those days too but a different sound since it was a different era for the big bands then. you definitely aren't getting the same 'herd' here on all the tracks here. this one's only for the avid collectors/fans."

"I have an old 33 of "Music for Tired Lovers," but it's full of static, so I'm going to purchase this album, even though I'm not much interested in "The Jazz Swinger" part. I'm not familiar with Herman's other styles, though I understand he's had many. The style of "Tired Lovers" does it for me. These great old standards are sung by Herman in a low-key, casual way, as if he were half asleep, just like the couple on the album cover.Old standards are my favorite kind of music, and I love to hear them sung by unexpected people, such as Linda Ronstadt's three albums of oldies and Toni Tenille's renditions of several classics."
Style AND content!

"You may love the big band sound...and here it is. But a bonus...Woody apparently liked to do some after hours singing with the band and they prevailed upon him to record them. I grew up with this playing late at night and have searched for it since. So...you get the best of both! As for "what the producers were thinking"...they were thinking, "let's let the public in on this too. Good listening!"
