"Captures Woody and the Herd at their best. Very much represents the best of this early 70's era, a peak in his career. It's live, intimate and very exciting."

"Woody Herman was a magificent band leader, who inspired his musicians to play every night to the peak of the abilities. This CD, with acceptable sound quality, captures the Herd wailing on a very good night in 1971. Herman's chief arranger at the time was Alan Broadbent who is well represented here as both pianist and arranger. His charts on "Blues in the Night" and "Love in Silent Amber" (featuring outstanding trombone by Bob Burgess) are the highlights of this fine set. Tenor saxophonist Sal Nistico really cooks in his solo spots and there is a fine solo trumpeter, Bobby Agnew. Perhaps the most remarkable performance is by drummer Ed Soph who really drives the band. As usual with Herman the ensemble sound is very full and tight. The only slight disappointment is Broadbent's "Variations on a Scene" which has some good moments but goes on too long to sustain one's interest fully. But overall, this is a very good example of live '70's Herman and is highly recommended. You'll enjoy Woody's spoken spots as well."
