CD ReviewsThis Wondermints C.D. is Wonderful! Richard S. Ledford | Provo, Utah | 06/16/2006 (5 out of 5 stars) "The Wondermints are a groups of alternative, retro-sixties and seventies-style rock. Around 2000 they became better known as Brian Wilson's back-up band. Since 1996 they have released three albums of original material (their second album consisted of some semi-obscure cover songs). Their first, self-titled album has a nice, retro-sixties feel to it. However, I don't consider this album outstanding. Their second album, Bali, was more rock-oriented and intense and showcased the group's musicianship. And finally there is their latest album, Mind If We Make Love To You. Wow! This latest effort is exceptional in its lyrics and its infectious melodies. The vocals (by all three members) exhibit exceptional clarity. The additional production is subtle and nicely crafted (but never overdone).
Here are some song highlights: The songs "Ride" and "Sp Nice" have the strongest Beach Boys influence of any of the songs (the latter is reminiscent of "California Girls"). In fact, Brian Wilson sings back-up on both songs. "Time has You" is reminiscent of Jimmy Webb's, "Wichita Lineman" melded with the song "Make It With You" by Bread. "Another Way" has a strong Rod Argent trademark on it. It is more similar to the Argent song, "Pleasure" (from their 1971 Ring Of Hands album) than from any song from the Zombies classic Odessey And Oracle album (I am an avid Zombies fan!). "Out Of Mind" is also very Jim Webb influenced. It recalls the lilting feel of his early songs like "Up, Up And Away" and "Carpet Man" (both recorded by The Fifth Dimension). "Sweeetness" has a mid-sixties bossa nove feel while "Something I Know" hearkens back to Billy Joel's "Piano Man," albeit more jazzy, crossed with The Nitty Gritty Dirt Band's version of "Mr. Bojangles." This album is quickly becoming one of my favorite "desert island" albums (along with albums by The Pearlfishers and Swing Out Sister)! If you like very nostalgic retro-pop with lots of indelible melodic hooks, then this C.D. is for YOU!" |
