MUCH BETTER than I expected!

"I was part of Willie's cult following in the early 60's and found his vocal delivery (which shifted seamlessly from singing to conversational speech) compelling. I had a number of his Liberty and RCA 45's, which I treasured. I ordered this CD expecting it to be RCA recordings of varied transfer quality, and was delighted to find 7 publishing demos with ONLY Willie and his guitar. These were apparently the first recordings of the songs because the working titles and chord progressions were sometimes significantly changed in later recordings. There was also a 3 song medley recorded live in Panther Hall in 1966 with a 3 piece backup band. Liner notes consist of 6 pages of biographical data by Stephen Thomas Erlewine (which everyone has already read)and contain NO INFO on the songs beyond titles.
Be forwarned that 3 of the tracks are NOT WILLIE. I have no idea who they are, but suspect they happened to be on the same demo tapes. If you are interested in Early Willie, THIS IS IT. If you are looking for Don Was productions or superstar guests, you may not like it. I considered taking off a star for the mystery performers, but, with 14 out of 17, it's still a bargain."

"I've got an extensive collection of the old Willie material but there are several songs here which I had never heard in any form and also demos of several others. But be aware. In addition there are two songs which are sung by Hank Cochran. This worked out great for me because I'm a big Cochran fan and there is very little of his material available on CD. The last track is also done by someone other than Willie and may be Faron Young, but I'm only guessing on that. The liner notes fail to mention anyone but Willie. Overall I think this is a great addition to anyone's collection who is into the old Willie stuff."
