Backhaus brings this often awkward music out of the salon in a stunning performance that will make much you listen to afterwards sound flat and dull. Not academic, yet fiercely intelligent, the music comes to life & you realise how someone like Brahms must have felt and what he intended - not virtuosic playing in the sense of glorifying the piano as an instrument but playing big enough to do the music justice. Extremely passionate; extremely moving."
