"I loved the original Fisherman's Blues. That album is one of my favorites from the eighties. I will not even classify it as an eighties album since it is timeless. This extended release is such a surprise, I am in awe. I believe the second disc alone is as good or even better than the original. It does not feel like outtakes or demos, it feels like a stand alone disc. The Waterboys need to release the disc that needs to be released.... The Fisherman's Blues Sessions. A four disc release consisting of all of the seesions recorded in the eighties for the Fisherman's Blues recordings. These recordings represent all that is right with music; The love of music, for music sake. There are no producers, music executives, cookie cutter money making agendas involved. We need more personal music produced today. This is so refreshing it is unbelievable. Buy this and discover music of the soul."

Worth Buying Even If You Have The Original

The original Fisherman's Blues is one of my 10 most played CDs and has been since I first heard it in 1990. The blend of Celtic, English, country, blues, and rock influences intertwine flawlessly. It is hard to categorize, but its power and brilliance are evident in every song. It is a timeless recording of vision, subtlety, and energy, on a par with Van Morrison's Astral Weeks. It touches me in a way that few CDs do and I keep coming back to it as some sort of musical touchstone. The new release has so many wonderful additional tracks, all of which add to the original. I understand that there is a lot of additional material from these recording session. If they release the 4 CD box set of Fisherman's Blues, I will grab that as well."

All that a reissue should be....The REAL Fisherman's Blues

"When I first heard Fisherman's Blues back in the late 80's, I absolutely fell in love with this band. The music was so soulful and honest, it was impossible not to feel it. Yet truthfully, for me, there was always something about this recording as a whole that I couldn't get my arms around to fully embrace it. It seemed as though it was trying to throw too many different musical genres into one release, not really devoting enough time to one particular style. The individual tracks were great, but the album itself was fragmented. After reading the liner notes from this new re-release, it completely makes sense as to why this occured. This album was the result of a full two and a half years of recording material. How do you select one album's worth of material from nearly one hundred recorded tracks? What this reissue does, is begin to fill in those gaps.



Like the previous reviewer stated, the bonus material on this album is absolutely phenomenal. It's simply a shame that it took nearly twenty years for music as beautiful as this to be released. To name a few, there is an alternate version of "When Ye Go Away" titled, "Killing My Heart". For my money, it is infinitely more compelling then the original. "You In The Sky" is quite simply, majestic. I believe it rivals any song on the original album. This release has also seen fit to provide us with extended versions of the original album's tracks "World Party" and "A Bang On The Ear". I personally believe that both songs benefit from the newly extended formats, and I particularly love the natural ending to the World Party track.



If the additional unreleased material is anywhere near as good as these two discs are, then like the other reviewer of this record states, we really need to have more of this beautiful music heard. And please, let's not wait another 18 years for the next round.....
