CD Reviews

Nice reunion album

"Since 1983, War has reunited a number of times, but only to play live at places like state fairs. Released in 1994, this is War's first studio album in 11 years. Four of the original members appear on at least some of the songs. This album is 70 minutes long with most songs right at 5 minutes. There are a couple of extended numbers at 7 and 10 minutes. There is a mixture in styles on this album. Most of the songs sound similar to older War material. There are some very good songs and music. But, some of the songs are more disco/pop oriented, in the style of the Commodores or Earth Wind and Fire. While these songs aren't that good, they are better musically than anything by the Commodores.Overall, there is nothing fantastic on this album, but there are some very good tracks and nothing stinks. On first listen, I would have only given it three stars, but as I listened to it more closely, I got to appreciate the music. If you throw out 3 or 4 of the lesser tracks, you are still left with over 40 minutes of fairly good music. If you already have everything by War, then this would be an OK album to get. If not, you should get the earlier material first."

On the WAR-path!

"Too bad this CD got overlooked for the most part. It's also too bad that radio didn't find it enough to their liking to play it more and give it the exposure it deserved. WAR was one of the great bands to emerge form the 1970's. The interacial outfit jammed hard funk and grooves like few others dared to attempt (Sly & The Family Stone clearly the acception). When "Peace Sign" came out it once again combined the famous rythems that WAR became legendary for. Then they added those classic twists of Latino vibes into the mix in just the most perfect of ways."Peace Sign" should have been huge! It's one of the band's best efforts by far. One listen to the title track proves that notion hands down. Right behind that is (in my opinion) the best song on this disc, "East L.A.," and within moments you know you are in for a helluva ride. "East L.A." has that good feeling vibe to it that reminds me of their 1976 mega-classic, "Summer." This is another perfect summer song that makes it impossible not to feel good and forget your troubles even if it's just for a few magic moments!Overall, with excellent songs like "Wild Rodriguez," "Da Roof" (KILLER keyboard riff!!!), and the ballad, "I'm The One (Who Understands)," this is a NOT-TO-BE-MISSED classic in the truest sense. "Peace Sign" shows again and again what a great band WAR was, is, and always will be. BUY IT...YOU'LL LIKE IT!"
