CD Reviews

The master plays one of his most beloved composers!
Hiram Gomez Pardo | Valencia, Venezuela | 07/28/2007
(5 out of 5 stars)

"Schubert' s piano music has experienced fortunately a new revival in these two decades. During composer's lifetime Vienna was mesmerized by Rossini and Paris, London and Vienna applauded untiringly the eccentricities of Paganini, Liszt and the delirious musical universe of Berlioz, while the Romantics (Mendelssohn, Chopin and Schumann were beloved icons in most of all those traditional listeners of a missed art of playing music.)

In this state of things Schubert' s music was relegated and even overlooked, because there was no time to understand or get close to the meaning of his genius when the tradition of the new faced against the historical tradition.

Schubert' s music had to wait for more than a Century when curiously Gustav Mahler, rediscovering the musical principles nestled under the carpet of the history still kept unknown scores of this genius.

Fortunately for us, a pianist ofe the artistic height of Schnabel made known the rest of the world after the WW1, the existence of Schubert. After him, other suprme masters followed similar paths: Edwin Fisher, wrought his most beloved pupil : Paul badura Skoda, who made of Schubert a true partnership around his multiple musical appearances around the world.

It would not be fair not to mention to Pablo Casals ind important chamber ensembles in what concerns the diffusion of his chamber music, previous, during and after the WW2; the universe for Schubert experienced a notable enhancement with the arrival of new pianists from Europe and URSS; Alfred Brendel, Rudolf Serkin,, Michelangeli, Richetr, Gilels, Walter Klien, anton Kuerti, Kurt Applebaum, Demus, Curzon nourished and impulsed to Schiff, Volodos, Perahia, Ushida in order to consolidate Schubert' s piano music among the most prestigious Concert Halls or famous musical Festivals.

But, taking into account the musical heritage of Badura Skoda respect to Edwin Fisher, we may realize with impressive detail multiple details of harmony, modulation and a certain missed sense of lyricism that disappeared pitifully after the WW2.
