"Edward Elgar is probably the greatest English composer of the 20th century, and some have argued he is the greatest English composer EVER. Though I wouldn't quite jump to assign that set of laurels (he's got some pretty stiff-upper-lip competition), his work is certainly unique and lovely to listen to. In typical Englishman style, Elgar deftly sidesteps most opportunities for brash compositional conceits, instead striving for solid, understated, yet lush arrangements. This collection highlights some of Elgar's best work. The music is an adult's wistful recollections of childhood. One can feel Elgar's passionate longing for a simpler time, even if he never had it. "Dream Children" may reduce many a listener to tears.Raymond Leppard skillfully and thoughtfully conducts, bringing a nearly perfect tone and feel to each work. This is also a very technically sound album, crisp and warm in resonance. I highly recommend giving this album a spin whilst wearing a set of good quality headphones for full effect!;-)"
