"As a close follower of twentieth century Russian/Soviet music I was pleased that the traditions of tonal music have been carried on yet another generation. Clearly Shostakovich, Kabalevsky and Sviridov and contempories (born near the turn of the century)have brought the world some of its best (and listenable) music of the previous century. Further another generation behind them (the likes of Andrei Eshpai, Andrei Petrov, Rodion Shchedrin and Boris Chaikovsky among others)have carried the tradition onward and upward to this day. But what of the current generation, those Russian composers born since the beginning of World War II? Some have been disapointing but Vladimir Ryabov (b.1950) is clearly in touch with the tonal world. Athough his music on this disk has its root in the romantic era, the twentieth century Russian motif clearly shines through and breathes wonderful life into the melodies it provides variations upon. The Concerto of Waltzes, written in the mid 1980s while others were involved in heavy metal is particularly listenable to the general classical public. Let's see more of his offerings at Amazon!"
