"This issue offers fans of Vivaldi's evergreen work two recordings, one of them certainly among the very greatest ever made, an older I Musici version from 1982 with a phenomenal violin solo by Pina Carmirelli. Although I don't know if this issue marks an improvement on an earlier CD version of this performance, available singly, Vivaldi: Le Quattro Stagioni (The Four Seasons) I can say it is better than the original LP issue, which suffers from Philip's engineers then tendencies to over-filter and compress the sensational sound on the original tapes.
On the current CD issue you can hear just how superbly Carmirelli plays the most difficult passages, and how glowing a sound stage the engineers captured at the recording site. The fullness of so many Stradivarius string instruments creates a lavish outpouring of tones, an embarrasment of riches which quite overwhelms one. This is a classic rendition, and everyone who loves this work should hear this CD; even those who long ago found it's incessant over-playing to have spoiled it's inital freshness and beauties. This is not the latest period instrument approach, but for pure beauty of sound coupled with years of experience in this music, this performance remains a towering achievement.
The second performance is incorporated into a 1990 film about Venice directed by Anotn van Munster. Once again I Musici play Vivaldi's famous music, this time with a new solo violin, Federico Agoslini, who frankly doesn't touch Carmirelli. The film might be described as a pleasant 3/4 of an hour of Venice sights and sounds. Not exactly earth-shaking, but charming in a non-offensive fashion.
Purchasing this for the DVD may not be the best choice for someone wishing only one performance of the music. However, if you've never been to Venice the film does offer many nice shots of that fabled city obvious not in a regular CD, and for people who like such travelogue/histories as included here this double issue may be a good choice.
