CD Reviews

Happily, finally...
Maeda Telecaster | USA | 10/03/2006
(4 out of 5 stars)

"Finally, an album that isn't just another indie-rock generic. With bits equally Brian Jonestown Massacre and The Pixies, and reminiscient of The Monkeys and The Mamas & Papas, this will make you dance and nod your head and clap your hands, sometimes all at once. The album is both heavy and light, with heavy, psych-y guitar solos and drums that really lash out at times. The first song, "Believer", is softly psychedelic, with wavery, dreamy, freak-out guitar injected into a stompy, clappy rhythum, while "Drown Them Out" reminds me of some early-90s jam, including Anita's voice on this, which sounds like a mix of Kim Deal and Julianna Hatfield. But the sweet-rock of that song doesn't last too long, as it continues into weird, but fantastic bowed saw, and then into more freak-out guitar riffing and chant-like harmonied singing. I love it. "We Do Not F**k Around" has some funny Pink Floyd-esque verses, but it doesn't stay there - it launches into more psychedelicious pop territory with "Faster Than A Dead Horse". Every song is different, but with the same Viva Voce stamp. It's original, but tastefully rips off bands and music of yore, as every new, good band does."
Great Southern Rock
Grandpa Green | Vancouver, B.C. | 02/26/2007
(5 out of 5 stars)

"I knew I was going to dig this album about thirty seconds into my first spin. The opening track "Believer" combines classic stoner rock, Beatles psychodelia, and a good old fashioned southern stomp. What follows is just as inventive and fully realised of a rock album as I've heard in recent years. The Albama rock paired with the smooth female vocals (think Azure Ray) combine to make something truly special. The biggest comliment I can give this album is that it is unlike anything I have heard of before. It is an unussual combination of sounds that, if your anything like me, will leave you with a huge smile."
A husband and wife duo that isn't totally lame
Andrea Bonaventura | Detroit, MI | 02/05/2007
(5 out of 5 stars)

"Husband and wife duo, Kevin Robinson and Anita Robinson, make up the sweet and soulful indie rock outfit, Viva Voice. They've earned their touring stripes by opening for indie legends like Sunny Day Real Estate.

Their 2006 release "Get Yr Blood Sucked Out" is arguably their best album to date. They've developed this fuzzy, distortion-filled, stoner rock sound with the harmonies of Sonny and Cher. Their dueling vocals are always appreciated and while this album isn't as poppy as their previous releases it really sets the bar for other indie bands attempting to break out."
