"Kabalevsky does not receive the appreciation that he should. I have heard people say that he's simplistic and wasn't nearly as good as his contemporaries such as Prokofiev and Shostakovich. However, simplistic is not the right word, I would describe him as one of the best Russian nationalistic composers of his time. His music is forceful and dynamic, he was very prolific in his compositions, and his tones are much more conservative than Prokofiev and Shostakovich. This is a great album as well as presentation by the Scottish National Orchestra and The London Philharmonic. Neeme Jarvi is distinctive and gives a great virtuosic performance. The Cello Concerto is my favorite and I highly recommend this album to anyone who enjoys music in a non-simplistic form."
