"This exceptional Decca release compiles all of Sir Georg Solti's most significant recordings of Wagner's music in the early to mid 1960s that is a magnificent testimonial to his excellence as one of our foremost interpreters of it, and the sonic excellence of the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra. Included are several overtures, of which there are two truly rousing renditions of the overtures for the "Flying Dutchman" and "Tannhauser". Equally memorable is a warm, vivid interpretation of the Bacchanale from Tannhauser. The last work is an emotionally riveting account that may be the best I have heard of Wagner's "Siegfried Idyll", featuring exquisite violin solos from orchestra leader Walter Weller. Each of these pieces features the entire orchestra and its traditional, warm Central European sound, now enhanced via the latest 24 bit digital image remastering. Without a doubt, a CD which fans of Sir Georg Solti, the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra (Wiener Philharmoniker) and Wagner shouldn't miss."
