South Pacific Without Hammerstein

"It's a shame this is going out of print. Richard Rodgers was unexpectedly asked to write a long score to accompany a television documentary about World War II in the South Pacific. With Robert Russell Bennet arranging and conducting, it's a very lush orchestral evocation of the naval battles in the 40s. Much of it sounds like outtakes from "South Pacific": "Guadalcanal March" has a lot of "Bloody Mary" in it. The island theme later became the hit song "No Other Love Have I." This is lovely music to think, read, or drive to."
Rememberance from my Childhood

"I've own this album on cassette tape and it is starting to degrade. So glad I found it again. I remember Sunday evenings in the 50's and couldn't wait for the next installment of Victory at Sea on TV. I was about 12 or 13 at the time. The haunting sounds of this album lives on. Bringing back a black and white TV show would be impossible today, but it would be wonderful to see a rerun of this say on PBS."
