Synopsis

Minnesota's Vestals is one of those guitar-driven pop bands, and Vestals is one of those song-driven debut albums that never runs out of celebrated sources to draw upon. And their derivative streak is painted not only by the contemporaries with whom they're linked, most notably Radiohead, but also crusty old British forbearers such as the Kinks, XTC, and, of course, the Beatles. But unlike so many current groups imitating the garage or punk sound, the Vestals keep you hooked with their irresistible hooks, punchy sound, and edgy sonic touches. Brothers Ben and Jeremy Gordon, who share songwriting credits, lead vocals, and guitar-playing duties, come across as real naturals, exploiting their blood bonds in the name of togetherness rather than the tension upon which the famous sibs in Oasis and Kinks thrive. On "Before the Color Dries," they also pass the ballad-with-strings test--the ones all pop bands worth their salt have been required to pass since "Eleanor Rigby." --Lloyd Sachs

CD Reviews

HOT !!! - new release from minneapolis
Paul D Nero | Columbia Heights, MN | 04/29/2004
(5 out of 5 stars)

"The Vestals are truly a great new band from Minneapolis! The new self-titled CD is a collection of amazing songs. I have always liked bands that have two lead singers who both possess great songwriting talent. So it adds a great dimension to have the two Gordon brothers each write and sing lead vocal/play guitar on about half of the songs on the album. They can blend great harmonies with great guitar playing. Nice musicianship all around and an album that requires multiple listens!"
Very Good

"I really enjoy this album. So many good things... vocals, guitars, songwriting. Listen to the drums in Childish Timeouts. Really cool."
I didn't know that you could make a guitar sound like that -

"Stand back and watch as the Minneapolis Music scene rears it's ever so tuneful head to rise from the pop rock ashes with this debut album by The Vestals!Yes, it's true, the Twin Cities music scene hasn't been quite the same since the mid-eighties, however, this gem of a record shows that not all hope has died. One part Guided by Voices, one part Strokes....one quick listen to "Three Girls Ago" will have you hooked and humming the chorus for WEEKS! This is power pop that is miles above the rest. Heavy rotation is highly recommended with periodical doses of live intervention....This album is better than pink lemonade!"
