Album DescriptionTwo CD set featuring 50 Gospel greats. The term Gospel comes from the old English words 'god-spell', meaning 'good tidings', which is a translation of the Greek term 'eu-angelion' employed in the New Testament. Gospel also refers to the writings of the Four Evangelists (Matthew, Mark, Luke and John), other non-canonical works of antiquity, and a style of religious music with words derived from the catholic texts that originated in African-American communities in the United States around the second half of the nineteenth century. Mostly a vocal genre, Gospel is interpreted both by a chorus and individual soloists and includes many musical forms from religious hymns to recitation backed by music or popular spiritual songs. This compilations brings together some of the greatest exponents of Gospel music including performances from Sister Rosetta Tharpe, Mahalia Jackson, Paul Robeson, Golden Gate Quartet, The Oak Ridge Boys, Louis Armstrong and many others. Greatest Hits. 2007.
