Enjoyable as a soundtrack and very dramatic!!!!

"This recording does not stand with the other recordings of Otello because it is a soundtrack first, full of sound effects. This intensifies the drama greatly, as does the feeling of space and distance in between.

This recording has received bad reviews mainly because it has been viewed as an opera recording. Placido Domingo has been criticized for "darkening" his voice but in reality it is only an effect, easily done, and available on the cheapest remastering software. Ricciarelli and Diaz were both criticized for being in one way or another inept. Maazel does well dramatically.

REMEMBER -- This is NOT an opera recording in the traditional sense but a COMPLETE (uncut) version of the soundtrack to Zefirelli's film in 1986. Considered for what it is - it is quite thrilling."
