Simply atrocious

(1 out of 5 stars)

"This may be Callas's very first Traviata, but it is one to avoid like the plague, NOT because of her, but because it sounds like not a single rehearsal took place prior to performance.

After a merely adequate performance of the Act 1 Prelude with de Fabritiis in the pit, the listener is then treated to some of the most embarrassingly bad ensemble playing ever committed to disc. The chorus, orchestra and solo singers are so "out of sync" at times, that it is difficult at times not to laugh out loud! Callas is in fine voice, however. Valletti, in lyrical roles a wonderful singer, is here out of his element as Alfredo. A more vigorous impetuous heroic style is really demanded in this role.

I must admit that I couldn't stomach listening to enough to actually hear Taddei as Germont pere, so I can't comment on his performance here.

To add insult to injury, the slipshod ensemble playing that runs ramshod over this wonderful piece is not assisted by an even more constricted choppy recorded sound than usual for these Mexico City live Callas opera performances.

So unless you are a die-hard masochistic Callas completist, who relishes poor recorded sound, and doesn't mind wallowing in musical chaos, I would NOT recommend this set under any circumstances, especially when you have the Lisbon live and Santini RAI Callas versions both available on CD."
