Worth the Ticket Price---Best Ventures Compilation Ever!

"If you are 100% a Ventures fan, there is a plethora of essential CDs that are available for your collection. While I love The Ventures, I am more of a surf instrumental fanboy on the whole. Therefore, I want a few key Ventures compilations so I can spend my fanboy dollars discovering other surf groups past & present like The Challengers, The Shadows, and The Bomboras.
This is the third collection of Ventures hits I have bought; it cost a prettier penny than the other two compilations, and I am glad I took the plunge. This is a thoroughly solid combo of traditional surf hits and pop-music covers.
One of the reasons I opt for Ventures "Greatest Hits" collections as opposed to their individual releases is because as much as I love The Ventures' unique surf-sounds, I always thought they went just a little overboard on the number of Top-40 Pop-Hit covers they recorded. This batch of Ventures gems has the perfect balance of Top 40 tunes and traditional Ventures' surf music.
The picks of Top 40 covers are some of their finest. Topping these, in my opinion, is their cover of Aquarius/Let the Sun Shine In, done in the fashion of The 5th Dimension. Nothing overly experimental, just a beautiful rendition that lets that distinct Ventures guitar flavor reign.
Next in line on their cover list is a tune I had heard on another Ventures compilation, "Slaughter On Tenth Avenue." I have a renewed love for their take on this song. The Ventures' cover of this tune is the version I have ever heard, and it has only been recently that I have had the opportunity to listen to the traditional versions of "Slaughter." I must say, The Ventures have achieved that rare accomplishment of taking a decent song and making into something twice as good. I know this statement might anger the Arts & Theater crowd out there, but The Ventures give "Slaughter On Tenth Avenue" some much needed life and passion. I even enjoy this version better than The Shadows' cover (and from me, that is saying a lot--- Britain's The Shadows are my personal favorite group in the Surf-Instrumental genre).
Other good covers include "Paint It Black" and "Classical Gas." About the only cover that doesn't work for me is their take on "House of the Rising Sun."
Some tunes that have a beautiful exotic flair in that distinct Ventures' flavor are "Kyoto Doll," "Manchurian Beat," and the timeless tune "Caravan."
The traditional Surf Hits are here too--- both versions of "Walk Don't Run," "Mr. Moto," "Pipeline," and much more. A FIVE STAR rating does not do this album justice. This is the best Ventures collection I have ever heard. Go out of your way to buy this CD---it is well worth the cost and effort.
