CD Reviews

You'll Sing Along Too
Patrick R. Raley | Louisiana USA | 03/27/2008
(4 out of 5 stars)

"I'll admit, not every song is wonderful on this one but it's still worth the listen. The best is that they sing along with some of the artists on their own songs. I wish the entire CD was filled with the artists instead of just 4 songs. Still most of the songs are very good and fun to listen to."
The Core Audience Might Like It
Mark Baker | Santa Clarita, CA United States | 04/03/2008
(3 out of 5 stars)

"VeggieTales has always been known for their music. For this release, they decide to cover classics from adult Christian music. They cover a range of styles from the rock of "Big House" and "Meant to Live" to the pop of "Baby, Baby" and the R&B of "I'll Take You There."

The one interesting thing is there is no story linking the songs together. Each song stands on its own, with the occasional dialog during the song. Some of it works, like Pa Grape playing his accordion during Mr. Lunt's moody song "Flood." At times it doesn't work, like Bob telling Larry and Peter Furler they are doing a good job during "Shine," Archibald's talking during "Dive," and the French Peas complaining about how loud their song, "Meant to Live" is.

What is amazing is that most of these songs sound exactly like their original versions. If I didn't know better, I'd say they used the original tracks. The only exception is "Smellin' Coffee." For some reason, they tried to make it rockier then the folk original. Trust me, it doesn't work.

Adding to the fun (and there is plenty of fun here), four of the artists covered show up to help out. Audio Adrenaline, newsboys, Steven Curtis Chapman, and Amy Grant all sing on their songs, and Steven and Amy interact a little with the veggies, and those moments are fun.

Many of these songs do work. Of course, I like the originals. And I guess that's my main reason for not liking this disc. While listening to Larry and company singing these songs is fun once or twice, if I want to listen to them, I'd rather listen to the original versions. I can see kids enjoying having "their" versions of some of their parent's songs. And parents will enjoy having some adult music their kids will enjoy listening to. But for those without kids, there is really little need to pick up this disc."

"This isn't my favorite Veggie Tale CD, but it is alright. I prefer "O Veggie Where art Thou?" and "Veggie Worship Songs"."
