"For fans of the piano concerto, this rare album is a must-have. Ralph Vaughan Williams' Concerto For Two Pianos is a masterpiece, rarely recorded. It was origianly written for a single pianist, and has been recorded and performed that way in the past. But many listeners felt that the orchestra overwhelmed the single piano in the piece, so RVW revised it for two pianos, to marvelous effect.
I love this piece from its thunderous beginning to its rambunctious third movement, but it is the haunting theme that emerges in the middle (and brings the concerto to its conclusion) that really defines this concerto. Once you've heard it, you'll never forget it.
Buy this album while you can. Menuhin, Markham, and Broadway made magic with this one, and some day you may not be able to find the RVW double piano concerto in any format. That would be a great tragedy.
