Album DescriptionIn 2002, the compilation "Synthpop Club Anthems" turned a lot of heads, and introduced a lot of people to the modern sounds of synthpop. People who were unfamiliar with the modern synthpop scene found themselves pleasantly surprised with the mix of club-friendly, high-energy music, with melodic vocals and meaningful lyrical content. Much of today's club music is devoid of thoughtful lyricism, aiming for the easy "shake it baby!" cliche's and mind-numbing repetition, which even pushes much electronic dance music completely into an instrumental realm in hopes of finding deeper value at least within the sound structures. At the same time, some trends in electronic pop music, which hark back to the 80's synthpop roots, focus so much on the simplicity of synthesizer sounds that the modern edge and production technology are often lost. It's fun for quick amusement, but maybe not for the long term.
"Synthpop Club Anthems" was meant to introduce people to a variety of dance music sounds by bands that not only maintain a fun electronic edge grounded in recent technology and musicianship, but who also have not forgotten the value of a good song. The bands certainly maintain their own approaches and styles, but present new music which can move you in the club as well as in the mind.
In 2003, this is volume two in the popular series from the synthpop label A Different Drum, and it's even more exciting and promising than the first. Synthpop, like most music genres, should indeed build on it's roots, but should never stop looking forward and pushing into the future. Now, get up and dance!
