Synopsis

Product Description
Originally a 1935 opera written by George Gershwin, Porgy And Bess was made into a film in 1959 with Sidney Poitier playing Porgy and Dorothy Dandridge as Bess. These are not the voices you will hear on this album, however, for Robert McFerrin dubbed the singing voice of Sidney and Adele Addison did the same for Dorothy. Other actors in the film were also dubbed, including Diahann Carroll, although not surprisingly Sammy Davis Jr does his own singing!

TO BE AVOIDED
W. S. Ankenbrock | New York, NY USA | 06/29/2010

"Without qualification, the worst CD transfer I have ever heard, even with Hallmark's low standards. It sounds dark, choked, muffled, generally distorted and at low volume. A major disappointment and definitely to be avoided."

"Do NOT buy this CD!

Fans of the 1960 movie know that it had great music in excellent stereo sound. This CD sounds like someone was holding a microphone in front of a cheap TV while playing an old VHS tape of the movie. It is in bad mono with dropouts every once in a while. It IS cheap, and I should have known that you get what you pay for, but I got all excited that a CD version of the LP was finally available after 50 years. Well, it is not worth five dollars and probably isn't even better than nothing. Amazon should have done their homework and informed us about the nature of this release. Calling this the "Original Soundtrack" borders on an outright lie.

I have a Columbia stereo LP copy of the soundtrack that has long been out of print, and it looks like the movie will never be re-released because of some crazy rules by the Gershwin estate. If you don't have the LP, check Ebay or a used record store to see if you can find one. If it's in decent shape it will be FAR, FAR preferable to this abomination. Also, flood Columbia records with requests to release a CD from the master tapes (which they must still have).

I'm also puzzled by who the CD manufacturer thinks the audience is for this release. Younger people probably have no knowledge of or affection for the movie (or Gershwin's opera), and older folks like me won't be satisfied with this sorry imitation of our original experience. I sent my copy back to Amazon the day after I got it.
