"VOCAL GROUPS * Classic Doo Wop Remembered is a slightly confusing name for this outstanding collection of recordings.
The 104 selections in this 4 disc box set are arranged chronologically by recording dates, from 1932 to 1955. The confusion lies in categorizing the earliest music here as doo wop. The Mills Brothers, Ink Spots and such were definitely not that, nor was doo wop being produced in the transition years of the late 40s, although the various groups were getting pretty close.
A better title might have been VOCAL GROUPS * Popular, Blues and Doo Wop.
VOCAL GROUPS is always engaging; the majority of its tracks are rarities and lesser known B-sides. By listening to the set in disc order one can actually hear the general musical progression toward doo wop and rock & roll that occurred over the span of a decade or so. Liner notes are provided for each CD as well as personnel (where available)-- sound quality is excellent throughout.
For any lover of vocal group obscurities this set is a must-have. The casual listener will also find a lot of entertaining music among these over one hundred songs. Highly recommended."
