Synopsis
Product Description It was an astonishingly bold concept by the producer Lou Reizner to present the Who s rock opera Tommy as a dramatised, all-star extravaganza. Originally released as a double LP in a slipcase with lavish, illustrations, this was the first ever coffee table album. And it proved a huge best seller when first released in 1972 and helped on its way by the hit single version of Pinball Wizard , sung with gusto by Rod Stewart on the album. Among the other guest performers accompanied by the mighty orchestra and choir are Pete Townshend, Sandy Denny, Richie Havens, Stevie Winwood, Roger Daltrey, John Entwistle, Maggie Bell, Ringo Starr and even movie actor Richard Harris. This important CD re-issue serves not only as a tribute to the genius of the Who and composer Townshend, but as a memorial to Lou Reizner, a pioneer of multi-media projects, who died aged just 43 in 1977. Includes a separate, fully illustrated, full colour, 36-page libretto with the storyline and characters of the Tommy saga, song lyrics and illustrations. |
CD ReviewsFABULOUS PACKAGE, AWFUL REMASTER BOB | LOS ANGELES, CA | 07/30/2009 (3 out of 5 stars) "When I received this set today, I was all prepared to post multiple reviews on all the prior, now-OOP LSO/Tommy versions here on Amazon, as those go for after-market big bucks. That was, however, until I A/B's this disc against the older Rhino release, because the mastering on this CD is just nothing short of bizarre.
The vocals have been loudened up throughout the recording, often drowning out the orchestral passages. But it's the loss of the upper midrange and high end that is just astounding. If you had a really great speaker, then took a heavy quilt and draped it over the front, that's what this disc sounds like. It's TERRIBLE. The Rhino disc was no great shakes in the audio department, but at least it was faithful to the original dynamic range, and you could hear the high end clearly! However, I can't applaud more the artwork restoration to a close facsimile of the original box set. There is no accreditation for that work, but someone did an absolutely spectacular job. If you own the older Rhino, here's my advice: First, HANG ON TO IT. Then, buy this set and switch the discs! You'll have the beautifully restored artwork AND acceptable sound." |
