Synopsis

Amazon.com
Take equal parts of urban dancehall reggae, sanctified dub music, and the upbeat British school of drum & bass and jungle. What do you get? Toasted, of course. Brought to you by Mutant Sound System (a premier drum & bass label located in the States), this spliff-friendly compilation features a dozen different artists, all dedicated to unusual dance-floor manifestations of electric reggae. While the word toasting refers to old-school Jamaican-style rap vocals, Toasted places a much larger emphasis on pulsing, double-time (jungle) rhythms that are artfully manufactured by modern DJs. Standout cuts include Bagga Worries & Jooxie Nice doing their up-tempo dub rap on "Legalise," Rude & Deadly's wicked "Mash Them Down," and the mutant reggae of DJ Monk & GM on "Cool Runnings." --Mitch Myers

"I was actually exposed to this when it was released, back in 98. I was into much more atmospheric stuff at the time so I didn't dig on it right away. Then about one year later stoned as hell, my bud pops this in and my mind proceeds to be blown.
Toasted is a fantastic compilation of what I consider to be the height of jungle/drumnbass business... Everybody seems to be digging on track 1, which is a dope song, but I really like the middle tracks in this compilation, much more headnoddable than the frenetic Fire track. Good (and often hilarious) ragga chants interspersed throughout the entire album with the whole bag of dub + drumnbass production tricks. Fat beats on par with DJ Shadow + Hive, as far as sample reconstruction...
Anyway. I love this cd and pop it in every once in a while, having been in my collection for 3 years now. Oh lord and the BASS! Wee! Really warm."

"For all you junglists at there, you need to add this to tha collection. Mutant Sound System once again shows they can reprazent with the finest (JungleSky!). The first track, Fire, is one of the finest blazin' tracks i have heard in a long time. Remixed by the Urban Shakedown Bid (Mickey Finn and Aphrodite, albums you should pick up as well!), they set the wheelz of steel into overdrive. However, the other tracks lack in the jump up intensity as "Fire", but there is still a mighty serving of the dubplate special with plenty of dope ragga MCing on the side. If you like Jungle, you needz to get up on this action. Add this to your already growing M.S.S. collection."
