Johnson, Lucky Roberts, Willie "The Lion" Smith, Fats Waller, Joe Turner, Art Tatum, Count Basie, Duke Ellington, Johnny Guarniari, Erroll Garner, Eubie Blake, and others! Not necessarily strictly Stride Piano, but piano styles all rooted in stride. So there is a great variety in the stylings, and you won't get bored listening to the CD all the way through (many times).
The remastering wizards at Saga Jazz have done it again: the fidelity belies the recording dates in the 30's and 40's (well, the 1921 Eubie Blake is a little rough, but gee ...). I don't see how anyone fond of jazz piano can get along without having this, both for the historical interest and the listening delight." |
