"This massive 32-track collection clocks in at more than two and a half hours of some of the finest Southern rock ever committed to vinyl. It begins and ends with the cornerstones of the genre--Lynyrd Skynyrd and The Allman Brothers. In addition, other Seventies stalwarts such as the Marshall Tucker Band, The Outlaws, The Charlie Daniels Band and Molly Hatchet are represented with their most well known songs.
However, it also includes second-generation acts like The Georgia Satellites, The Kentucky Headhunters and Steve Earle from the Eighties. And while some may argue the point, do we really need another anthology with "Sweet Home Alabama" or "Ramblin' Man"; it's nice to have these songs all in one collection.
But what truly makes this a comprehensive set is the inclusion of lesser known artists like The Arc Angels (featuring Doyle Bramhall II and Charlie Sexton) and Capricorn Records' all but forgotten Cowboy. Hip-O Records has done a uniformaly excellent job with its Gold Series, and SOUTHERN ROCK GOLD is one of the label's highwater marks. VERY HIGHLY RECOMMENDED"
Great Collection

"What a great collection. This one's got almost all of 'em. After watching CMT's top 20 southern rock songs of all time, I started scrambling to fill in the gaps in my collection. Then I stumbled on this latest 2 CD compilation. I was surprised to see not only did they include the really big all time classics, but many others that are usually overlooked. All in all, worth getting."
Ditto.....some gems on this collection!!!!!!!

"Wow!...I have finally found 'Mindbender' on Cd (Jimmy Hall on lead vocals, in case you didn't know)..'Please Be With Me' by Cowboy (off Clapton's 461, but written by these guys). You get the Dixie Dregs, Sea Level for the jazzier side...'Only You Know and I Know' by Delaney and Bonnie, another cool addition..but nuff said...if you're not convinced now, well check out the rest of the track listing..you should be, convinced that is."

"I'm not always one for collection packages... and I must say that as much a fan I am of the Southern Rock craze of the seventies, most miss the horse completely when they put together a compilation of it. Theres a lot of goods out there and most collections are sparse, with like ten tracks or so. Not here. Sure Skynyrd and The Allmans have got loads of great stuff, so you may want to get some full albums by those guys... but it doesn't hurt to have them here, same goes for Molly Hatchet and The Outlaws,,, but then you got all of these obsurities. Usually it's hard to find these cuts in a good place where you aren't barraged mainly with too many bogus cuts or weird eighties songs by bands that at one time may have produced Southern Rock. Or even(ugh) post nine eleven red state music. This two disc package is a solid collection from when Southern Rock was just ace kickin music to kick ace by. All the good rarities, shuffled together with plenty of goods from the elite. If you lookin to party, or cruise around disturbing the whole neighborhood late at night... you are in good hands with this collection. As Charlie Daniels would say "The South is gonna do it again!" feel that vibe. Completely satisfied with this bit."
